b'PERIO PEOPLEAAPs longest living member passes away at 105Dr. Benjamin Dienstein, the AAPsFollowing his tour of duty, Dr. Dienstein longest living member, died at thereturned to UCSF where he completed his age of 105 in Marin County, Calif. Dr.residency in periodontics. He went on to Dienstein joined the Academy in 1957help establish the UCSF Periodontology and remained a member for 63 years. Dr.Department and taught part-time at the Dienstein was a prolific contributor to thedental school for over 65 years until the age specialty of periodontics, serving as anof 102. In addition, he maintained a private educator, clinician, and researcher whopractice in Northern California for more than co-authored three articles in the Journal of50 years.Periodontology. Dr. Dienstein was a founding member and Dr. Dienstein attended the University ofpast president of the Northern California California Berkeley as an undergraduateSociety of Periodontology. Additionally, his and went on to receive his dental degreecommitment to helping patients receive from the University of California Sanaccess to oral health through insurance Francisco in 1941. Upon graduating fromcontributed to the establishment of what is dental school, Dr. Dienstein was drafted intonow Delta Dental. the US Army where he served for five years in the 16 thArmored Division, a branch ofDr. Dienstein is survived by his wifeGeneral Pattons Army.Julie, son Larry, daughter Dianne, and numerous relatives. In memoriam: Robert FerrisAAP past president Robert Ferris, DDS, PhD, passed away on Oct. 1 at age 83. Dr. Ferris joined the Academy in 1967 and remained a member until his death. In addition to serving on the AAP Board of Trustees, he was also president of the AAP Foundation and a Director and Chair of the American Board of Periodontology, in addition toFollow the AAP on social media!holding appointments on several other AAP committees and task forces. Dr. Ferris served as a delegate of the American Dental Association (ADA), and in 2013 received the ADAs Distinguished Service Award. He was also honored by the AAP, receiving the Gold Medal Award in 2003, the Presidential Award (now the Distinguished Service Award) in 2001, and three Special Citations. Dr. Ferris completed his undergraduate degree at Spring Hill College in Tennessee. He received his DDS at Emory University Dental School, followed by his MS in periodontics from Ohio State University (OSU). He went on to earn a PhD in immunology from OSU in 1967. Dr. Ferris practiced periodontics near Orlando, FL for over fifty years. He@amer_acad_perioalso held a position as a clinical professor of periodontics at the University of Florida College of Dentistry.Dr. Ferris is survived by his wife, two children, and five grandchildren.
