The dentist informed my friend that he performs implant and periodontal surgery, and that nonsurgical periodontal therapy and periodontal maintenance care is performed in his office by his hygiene team.He Richard J. My colleague in turn asked me DDS, FACD, FICD as an AAP District 6 Trustee, How is the AAP addressing this increasing trend?Does this story resonate with you? It does for me, and it is one of the reasons I am running for AAP Secretary/Treasurer. My name is Richard J. (Rick) Nagy, and it is an honor to be nominated by the AAP Officer Nominating Committee for this leadership position. I understand the changing landscape of practicing periodontists today which includes both challenges and rewards. With over thirty years in dentistry, I have seen shifts in periodontal practice models, and I have personally been a private practice owner for over twenty years, an It is my hope andassociate, a traveling periodontist, and a periodontal educator currently serving as a postgraduate periodontics program director. In answering the following vision that asquestions, it is my hope that you will gain an understanding of who I am as a person and my leadership qualifications as well as my vision for the future of our the AAP movesspecialty.forward, the newerWhy be an AAP member?This may seem like a basic question, but the answer could be different periodontistsdepending on your age. Those born between 1946 and 1964, the Baby Boomers, may answer that it is the right and expected thing to do and they will be engagedwould not question why they should be a member. Generation X (born 1965-1980), Millennials (born 1981-1996) and Generation Z (born 1997-2012) and their voiceswill want to know the value of being a member of the AAP. As the boomer periodontists retire, it becomes the responsibility of the younger periodontists to heard so that theuphold the specialty of periodontics as well as to become the leaders to carry forth the Academys mission: To champion member success and professional academy canpartnerships for optimal health and quality of life. While the mission transcends generations, the way we communicate to members may have generational adapt and bedifferences. It is my hope and vision that as the AAP moves forward, the newer periodontists will be engaged and their voices heard so that the academy can meaningful to theseadapt and be meaningful to these contemporary colleagues. The Academy has recently improved the online membership directory with more current contemporaryand accurate listings and more robust searching for member periodontists by a customizable radius. This is helpful to allow an immediate address update colleagues. for periodontists who work in several practice locations, as well as finding a periodontist not actually in the city searched but close by. In addition, to enhance member value and engagement especially with the younger periodontists I envision an AAP smartphone app to allow access to all AAP programs, services, and resources as well as an avenue for quick access to reach, communicate, and engage with other colleagues and AAP staff/leadership.
